Day 2 - Thursday 11/1/07

Once Renea awoke from her slumber, we decided to enjoy our first morning in Maui with a walk along the shoreline. There is a paved walking path that goes up past all the resort hotels. It was very nice.

Once we returned to the Kea Lani we had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Café Ciao. We chose to have the breakfast buffet. Since all our expenses are being paid, we charge all our meals to Renea’s parent’s suite. Often when we give their suite number, the server will ask, “Was your dad here earlier?” It is a well know fact that Dennis likes to rise early and seek out food, and apparently he leaves quite an impression wherever he goes.

The restaurant is open air so there are lots of feathered friends around to swoop in on the leftovers. In fact, when a party leaves their table, a flock of birds will quickly descend and take their place. This grosses Renea out.

After breakfast we decided to take a nap. And why not, we’re on vacation. After a while Barbara called and said Dennis was reserving some lounge chairs by the pool for us. When we arrived, Dennis pointed over to where our chairs were. It was about 50 feet away from where he was sitting. He obviously really enjoys our company.

Finally, we were able to enjoy the very thing we flew 3000 miles to experience…a strawberry and banana smoothie.

After a while I decided to go workout at the fitness center. I get a little bored just lying around poolside.

Around 4:00 p.m. we went to the other side of the island to Mama’s Fish House for dinner. It is our favorite place to eat in Maui. The atmosphere is retro Hawaiian including old-school Hawaiian tunes, Frank Sinatra, and Glen Miller. The location is perfect as you look out over the crashing waves. And the food…! Every entrée and dessert we ordered was (as Barbara said over and over) “Out of this world!” Everything we put in our mouths was so good, I considered eating the tablecloth.

Barbara was very excited for us to meet Coco, a local parrot she encountered during her last trip to Mama’s. He flies over to visit with the patrons. He wasn’t there this evening, so Barbara wandered the grounds calling, “Coco, Coco.” While Dennis stood back and supplied commentary on his wife’s actions by mockingly saying, “Coo-coo, coo-coo.”

We enjoyed many laughs this night. I nearly drove off the road laughing when Barbara shared the story of how Dennis the other day was correcting a native from the Philippines on how to pronounce a word in Filipino.

After a drink (water/latte) at the Kea Lani lounge, and a few more laughs, we collapsed into bed. Yes the local time was only 9:00 p.m. but my body clock told me it was well past my bedtime.
